Re: sand in my photographic camera ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh HELP
I promise you have homeowners insurance, or a lot of coin to spare.
I used to piece of work in a camera shop years agone, well-nigh 1/iv mile from the beach hither in Florida, and every week someone would come in with the same question. Basically, the camera is toast. The two worst things for a camera are common salt water and sand. The salt corrodes the electronics and the sand gets into all openings and gets embedded in the lubricant. Warranties don't cover either form of damage.
Sorry man.

I owned an electronics service company a number of years ago. Nosotros used to see the same thing with Walkmans and the like. It'south actually a shame, just they were ever unrepairable. In that location's just no way to accomodate the huge amount of labor required to make things right. I'm really sorry to hear about this happening to a camera like the 40D.

Send it to Canon Irvine, CA service center.
At least see what they are willing to do. You might be surprised past a kind technician who is willing to aid (without charging you). Also, you might have only a couple of grains of sand so it might be a relatively piece of cake fix. It is worth a shot. Even if they accuse you some money information technology is still worth saving a new photographic camera and lens if not also expensive. Don't give up.

Re: sand in my camera ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Assistance
If it's not too bad, you lot may exist able to become information technology out from under the dial with a brush (painting brush, thin flat type). Note that you may risk pushing information technology in further in. Happened to me likewise, and I got it out that style, but information technology was very fine sand, and non a lot of it.
Non sure what you lot can do regarding the focus ring.
You may want to check with Canon to see how much they will charge for servicing. If they take it autonomously cleaning the sand out should be easy.
Good luck.

A couple of years ago I had a like experience in the Taklamakan desert. Later on I could hear and feel the sand grinding on the photographic camera dials and switches. I cleaned and blew out as much equally I could and then carried on using it. It'south still going great. The only sign that it had such trauma are a couple of scratches around the on/off switch. So maybe its not all doom and gloom.

My suggestion...
I've establish that using a vacuum cleaning method is far better than any sort ot air blast. Blasting air just drives the sand deeper just like the wind that drove it into the photographic camera to begin with. Brushes don't seem to work well either.
You do have to utilize the vacuuming method with care, still, because it tin can suck out more than just the sand. I use a small-nozzle attachement to a central vac and increase the suction gradually by covering the nozzle gaps with my fingers. You do have to be very careful and to take your time in doing it. I use the same method to make clean my electrical razor. The first time I dide that many years agone I was besides agressive and the rotary blades were sucked out of it. That could happen with the dial just is less likely with the focusing ring. You should also rotate the punch and ring every bit you proceed.
I just got back from four weeks in Hawaii with a 40d and three lenses. I've also learned the hard fashion to be very conscientious with sand, salt and volcanic dust and gases. The vac method did clean a Minolta SLR lens for me years ago. It too had Florida beach sand in its focusing ring.
Adept luck!

Thanks to everyone trying to assist. I will try the vacum thing and if that doesnt work I volition accept to send information technology to canon, they said it could be very exspensive wich sucks, subsequently spending 1500 on this camera. Im just scared to keep using it. I would hate to ruin information technology when it could of been fixed. Hopefully canon doesnt try to screw me over and charge me for more than than they have to. Cheers over again for the suggestions.

I have used my 30D on the beach many times with spray and sand, its been down the Colorado River through rapids. Its been dropped ,buried under me when I fell through a snow hole and come out soaked. I don't know how many times I have waited for condensation to articulate when I have brought it in from freezing conditions and it was left out over night in a sand tempest in the Mojave Desert. It has a fissure in its case from where I dropped it in a parking lot .Each fourth dimension Canon of Irvine has fixed it. I get a few weird looks and the last time the guy but shook his head. But information technology got fixed.
Transport it to them and ask them to give information technology a CLA (clean lube and adjust) I think they charged me $180 last time
You lot will be amazed what they tin can do

Why does the original purchase price
have anything to do with the cost of cleaning up the camera? You did it. Why should Canon subsidize your error? Y'all paid for the photographic camera and its capabilities. You did not pay for extended, above and beyond maintenance.

What?

Why would yous even say that? If they're willing to work on it at all, they're doing you a favor. Eveyone has to warranty their work, and near generic shops won't touch an item that's been contaminated with salt or sand. Canon has a good reputation overall for their service policies, and then maybe they'll take care of you. You lot shouldn't misunderstand the situation though if you don't like the estimate or if they return it unrepaired. This is non a trivial affair to brand right, and Canon isn't to blame for that.

Send to Canon for a clean/lube as someone else has already mentioned. Your problem is not at all rare ... maybe y'all've noticed, but pro-pictures of women on beaches dressed scantily are fairly mutual in magazines. These pros don't throw away x, xx, and 30 thousand dollar cameras when the sand kicks up. They send 'em away for a cleaning and lube. Simple, relatively inexpensive, and effective.

This is more than a make clean and lube. You can bet that the estimate will be way over the $185 (or what ever information technology was) that the other member posted. Sand gets ever where which means they will have to break down every component of the camera to try and get most of information technology, pop out all the buttons & dials... every affair. No matter how great of a job they do, I would imagine that there volition notwithstanding exist a piffling left in there. Plus, if it has scratched up the sensor, mirror or anything else yous are looking at the price of replacing those as well. I wish you the best of luck but I think you are looking at purchasing a new camera. Maybe y'all tin sell your current on on Craigslist for parts or something and try to become some coin out of information technology.
Re: sand in my photographic camera ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Aid
How is it you think every pro photog in the world takes shots on beaches? They merely forfeit a camera every time they practise it?
It'southward a clean and lube, simple as that. At that place may be the random bits of sand inside certain areas just a little sand isn't going to render the camera useless. Call back of it as a "graphic symbol" adder. I've had sand in many cameras and while the grit can be a little annoying, it eventually wears away.

Re: sand in my photographic camera ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh HELP
Saying "Information technology's a clean and lube, unproblematic every bit that." is like taking a car that was involved in a flood to a item shop and saying I desire your typical cleaning... and expecting it to wait like it did before the flood... unrealistic. Like the other poster stated well-nigh the ane series, weather sealing. Don't get me wrong, I practice feel bad for the OP and wish them the all-time. No matter how careful you lot are, something unexpected can happen and yous are simply out of luck.
He didn't flood the body. Just some sand.
In fact no ane knows how much until Canon checks it out.

yeah this is so true, everyone forgets they accept a very powerfull cleaning device , and lets face it ,everyone has 1.
if you dont accept the attachment with the squashed terminate yous tin make i from 1 1/ii" or smaller normal grey plumbers waste pipe , heat the stop with your wifes blow dryer (they love that) and squash the end downwards , you can even add a small condom hose at this point that is easier to directly the suck ... and at that place is going to be a lot.
whats happened to the 'do it yourself ' mentality of the expert old days
you havent lost a photographic camera but gained an opitunity to make stuff happen man !
